Before the summer of 2007, 27-year-old Tiffany Medina never considered herself to be an athlete. Tiffany was born with bilateral macular scarring that obscures her central vision and distorts her remaining peripheral vision. She has dabbled in swimming, rowing, and yoga, much like she has dabbled in other activities, such as jazz piano, theater, and pottery. Throughout most of her life, she has dedicated her time to her studies, receiving her B.A. from Williams College in Massachusetts and her M.S. from Penn State University. While taking a year off from a Ph.D. program in clinical psychology, however, she joined Team in Training, part of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and participated in her first triathlon in June of 2007. She was hooked!
In her first Olympic-distance and long course triathlon, Tiffany experimented with a number of guiding techniques because she had never met other blind triathletes. Needless to say, she was excited when she learned about the C-Different Foundation. Her first event with C Different was the 2007 Miami Man triathlon and it was an amazing experience. Her favorite memory of the event was swapping stories with the athletes and guides she met. She hopes to continue her involvement with C-Different and perhaps to train for an Ironman competition in the future.
