Dave Bigoney

Originally from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, David moved to Tallahassee FL. in 1995 after serving four years in the U.S. NAVY to attend Tallahassee Community College (TCC).  In December of 1996, while visiting family in Ft. Lauderdale, he was caught in a domestic dispute between his father and step mother, which resulted in him being shot in the head leaving him completely blind.

Eight months later, David received training and his first guide dog from Southeastern Guide Dogs, which enabled him to re-enter TCC.  David continued to receive valuable skills utilizing the services of organizations, such as the Center for Independence for the Blind, the Center for Independent Living, and the Division of Blind Services.

In March of 2001, David decided that he would re-acclimate himself to the physical fitness side of life that he had been so involved in prior to becoming blind.  With the support of his wife, family, friends, and the community, he completed his first triathlon.  He was immediately hooked!  He found a sport that challenged him physically and mentally.

Only four months after his first triathlon, he qualified and competed at the 2001 International Triathlon Union World Championship in Edmonton, Canada placing 2nd in the physically challenged blind category.  He continues to compete and is excelling while also pursuing a degree in Information Studies at Florida State University.
