Kyle is 16 years old and is a sophomore at Paxon School for Advanced Studies in Jacksonville Florida . Kyle was diagnosed with Bilateral Sporadic Retinoblastoma at 10 months old which resulted in the removal of his left eye at five and his right eye at six because of the heavy toll that radiation and chemo therapy took on his eyes. Kyle went through a short stage of depression at the total loss of his sight but that was soon turned around when he met Erik Weihenmayer (first blind man to climb and summit the Seven Summits, tallest peak on each of the seven continents including Mount Everest ). Erik encouraged Kyle to try something challenging, like rock climbing. It didn't matter if Kyle was blind, because climbing was just as much a mental challenge as a physical one.
With Erik's encouragement Kyle started climbing when he was eight. Soon Kyle was competing in rock climbing competitions across the state of Florida .
When Kyle was 11 he was invited to compete in the "11 And Under" age division at the national climbing competition in Oregon . Around this same time Kyle appeared on the Oprah Whinnfrey Show as a surprise guest to Erik Weihenmayer. When Kyle was 14 he traveled to Peru as a member of a group of 18 integrated blind and sighted students led by Erik Weihenmayer to Peru South America to hike the Ankascocha Trail into Machu Picchu . When this adventure was over, Kyle and several other teammates organized a trip to Tanzania . In the summer of 2007 10 of the original 18 students (including Kyle) traveled to Tanzania to climb Kount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain on the African continent, led by friend and climbing teammate of Erik Weihenmayer and summitter of six of the seven summits, Eric Alexander. Eight of the 10 students made it to the summit including all three blind climbers (including Kyle) and the group's only visually impaired climber. Although Kyle has climbed in climbing competitions across the state of Florida , has been to Machu Picchu and the roof of Africa , he is still yearning for more summijs. Whether those summits are the tops of mountains, or the summits of showing the world that anyone can do anything if you just put your mind to it.
