Kim Borowicz is visually impaired due to a genetic condition called Achromatopsia. This condition results in Kim being legally blind, color blind and highly light sensitive. Despite this, Kim has a vision for people with disabilities. This past June (2007) Kim graduated from the University of Washington School of Law. She rreceived her BA in Social Sciences/Psychology from Michigan State University in 2004. Kim is a tireless advocate for disability rights, and has used her experience with her visual impairment as a catalyst to help others. “I have never let my vision stop me from achieving my goals.”
Kim has started a career in disability rights law and has worked at organizations such as the National Council on Disability and the American Association of People with Disabilities. “I am committed to breaking down barriers to inclusion. I plan to use the law to tackle issues such as accessible transportation, the availability of textbooks in alternative formats, and access to mainstream education.”
With CDifferent’s help, Kim competed in her first triathlon on September 23, 2007 in Enumclaw, Washington, along with guides Kara Nielsen and Sarah Shifley. She was also guided through the Seattle half-marathon in November 2007. “It is amazing to feel like an athlete for the first time in my life. I was always the kid who got hit in the head with the ball in gym class, and now I am competing like everyone else. It’s so exciting!”
