I am 39 yrs old, and I live near oxford in england. I have been married to my ever supportive wife Dawn for twenty years now. We have 4 sons Sam 19, Ben 16, Connor 4 ,and Tyla 3.
I left school at 16 and started on an engineering apprenticeship, but left that at 18 to join the Royal Air Force as a vehicle mechanic. I served in the Air Force for 12 years. When I left there I worked as a truck mechanic for a local company which also included working on my boss's race truck. That was great and in that year he was British Champion, driving his Volvo white Aerodine, from the US.
I had to finish work that involved driving in 2001. And after a time of doom and gloom, I went back to work in factories. In Feb 2006 I had to finish that as well, as my eyesight was now a lot worse. I have retinitus pigmentosa and I have between 5 and 10 degrees of vision left.
In april this year I started training for the London Triathlon which on August the 5th. I completed in 2hr 56 . I was the only visually impaired athlete racing out of a total of around 10,000 entrants. A month later and I was in Hamburg at the World Champs, the only person from GB in the AWAD (Athletes With A Disability) category. I finished 5th, but this was a good experience for me. I will be at the world champs in vancouver in June 2008. Hopefully with some more people this time not just me. I also hope to be at Ironman Couer d'Alene with you guys in June as well. That would be awesome.
